Icy Strait Point
MRV Architects was hired by Huna Corporation to provide conceptual site planning and detailed building design for comprehensive expansions to their visitor facilities at Icy Strait Point, just outside of Hoonah.
The new site plan and building additions were central to a major expansion around a new deep-draft cruise ship dock, which substantially increased the number of visitors to the complex. The site plan was organized to emphasize the incredible beauty of the site, which has no visible trace of any other facilities or modern development. Following this theme, the buildings were developed with a regional Tlingit design aesthetic, with cedar-sided facilities drawing from traditional clan house forms. Vehicles and other modern intrusions were shielded, with a focus on the waterfront, ponds, forest, and natural setting.
