Instructional Arts Campus, Sealaska Heritage Institute
MRV Architects has performed Schematic design for a proposed Arts Instructional Campus for the Sealaska Heritage Institute. This innovative project will transform an existing surface parking lot at a key location in Downtown Juneau fronting the Walter Soboleff Building into a multi-use arts plaza. Proposed improvements would provide a combination of open space, covered flexible-use buildings, and instructional spaces.
To create this plaza, the entire surface parking area will be reconstructed into a below-grade basement parking facility, freeing up the surface areas for dance performances, story-telling, open-air markets, and similar functions. The instructional arts buildings will provide year-round opportunity for cultural instruction in a variety of practices, including carving, jewelry, weaving, and dance.
