Initial design work for the new Kodiak Public Library started in 2010 under the Foraker Pre-Development Program. In 2011, MRV was selected as the project architect and design for the final project started in earnest.
The new library facility is 16,000sf on a beautiful hilltop location with views to Near Island and beyond. The library design arranges public reading rooms and the Children’s Room in a series of glazed “dormers” along the south edge. A clerestory-lit Main Hall with columns framed in spruce harvested from the site opens creates an airy main circulation spine.
The library is being constructed under a fast-track schedule with Cornerstone General Contractors. Excavation started in June 2012 as design work continued.
